“The dangers of global warming still loom large, and the national contributions (INDCs) are not sufficient to reach the goals set in the Paris Agreement. Every additional ton of carbon deposited in the atmosphere makes it more difficult to limit global warming. So how can we reduce emissions – soon? An effective instrument to foster decarbonisation is the introduction of a price on carbon in combination with strategic transfers. Only an internationally coordinated climate policy will result in taking conventional coal-fired power plants off the net and making renewables profitable. Prof. Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer, designated director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) will discuss the correlation between climate, coal, and capital.”
